An alter ego (from Latin, "other I") is another self, a second personality or persona within a person. The term is commonly used in literature analysis and comparison to describe characters who are psychologically identical.

In some cases, it is difficult to identify which ego is the base and which is the alter. Many superheroes use an alter ego to protect their normal lives, Bruce Wayne's alter ego being Batman. In the Pre-Crisis Superman comics, Superman's alter ego is Clark Kent, while in the Post-Crisis (all comics after 1986's revamp) Clark Kent is the real person and Superman is the alter ego. After Superman's 2003 revamp, his true identity is a combination of both previous portrayals. Still others, such as Darth Vader, go through a drastic change at a point in their life and all but cease to be their former self.

Names on Court Documents, SSN Cards, Licenses and anything else from the government will always be in all CAPS, since it is not your correct name it is an Alter Ego and not entitled to Sovereign Rights.

The term and concept are also frequently used in popular fiction, such as in comic books, for the secret identity of a superhero, vigilante, or crimefighter:
